Volunteers make the Children Smile!
Written by Liz Greenhalgh
During the last week of April, we were very happy to have with us, Joyce Patterson and Elaine Craig from Romanian Big Smile, Edinburgh. Romanian Big Smile has been supporting FAST for a number of years, and it is always great to see them again.
Joyce and Elaine were keen, as always to help with the Education Project and were asked to create an activity for the children, related to theme of ‘Occupations’. They delved into their creative toolbox and made a whole village on a large piece of paper, which included various important locations, a police station, a green grocer, a church, fire station, etc. The children then made the people that work within the different work places and stuck them to the map. This was a great, fun learning activity for the children whom all enjoyed taking part.
They were also given the challenge to create a wall display of some of the children’s work. A vase was made, which stands out from the board and the children made some colourful flowers, which now fill the vase, resulting in a bright and wonderful 3D display.
The first music club also took place during the week they were here and they were a great support, deciding on a craft and a game activity and also helping the children during the time that the children were being taught the recorder by Ema.
Romanian Big Smile are continually fund raising for FAST and have held some imaginative fund raisers in the past. At the end of this month, the organisation is holding a 1940’s glamorous themed evening, which includes live singing, an auction and a raffle. There are some great prizes up for auction/raffle, including a trip to Ireland, with transport and accommodation included. Tickets cost 35GBP and with a 2 course meal, coffee and all of the above entertainment included, it is a night not to be missed!
The flyer for the event can be seen in the main photo, and for anyone who is interested in attending the event in Edinburgh, you should contact: romanian.bigsmile@hotmail.co.uk
The organisation wish to raise funds for a very worthwhile, specific goal; to provide a roof for one of the families in the Tarlungeni village. The family, who have 3 children have already initiated the building of their new house, but this has now come to a standstill, due to a lack of resources. The funding will mean that the family will be able to complete their house this year and move in before the winter arrives.
We enjoyed having the team with us for a week, which seemed to go by very quickly and we look forward to hearing the news about how successful the 1940’s themed evening is and seeing them again in October.
